We notice a lot of similarities between the problems that startups face
on the business, administrative, and scaling side. This is a bit of an
open session and here are a few ideas to get things going:
- Scaling a service doesn't involve just adding more boxes. Best practices in DBA? Fail-over? Preferred hosting solutions?
- Hiring. How fast? Sources of talent? Students vs Industry Professionals? How to hire at the C-level?
- Going from development mode to real revenue. How to start looking like a company instead of a research project.

[Questions?]
[fred] Is there some magic number of
employees or users (or both) that start the growing pains. Does
outsourcing key areas like development, payroll/benefits, finance, etc
reduce the growing pains? What strategies can be used to reduce, defer,
or eliminate them?
[albert] How do you plan capacity (both
hardware and employees)? What are the risks / benefits of building /
hiring ahead of the curve? Of waiting?
[marc hedlund] I'm happy
to talk about "hacking del.icio.us for recruits," which has been my
most successful non-traditional recruiting method of late.
